One of my Lisa friends read my blog about feeling fugly and my ...discomfort.. in regard to facing 60...NEXT year. And Lisa, though you said to remember "60 and sassy" .....im feeling pretty assy.
The body itself, stiff , dusty. The brain, foggy. The emotions like a roller-coaster. ( oh that estrogen)
Feeling kind of guilty about the beautiful sunny blue days here, while my dear family and friends on the east coast are suffering under the sweltering "dome of heat" i keep hearing about on the internet. Not just any old heat spell from what i understand. Im hoping you're all keeping hydrated and not pushing yourself. Im not an advocate of air-conditioning but this week i sure hope you have it.
I don't know how the time is going by so fast. Especially in the mornings. I must be moving slower or loosing time in my daydreaming.
Yesterday Larry and I took a ride to Bucks Lake for Lunch and then up to Quincy to see if the farmer's market was open. We were an hour early for the market and didn't hang around so headed back over the mountain to Brush Creek.
Bucks Lake is a resort area at a higher elevation ....actually i think you cross over the highest elevation on the Oro-Quincy highway, i've never heard it referred to as any kind of " pass" .. but the lake is on the downside toward Quincy.
People from the valley drag their campers and boats up there or rent cabins and bring their families for weeks or weekends. It's cool and breezy. Surrounded by evergreen forests, there is a trail you can take and walk/hike around the lake.
Inside the "lodge" is a little store, very little, and there is an actual little lodge area with a fireplace and a sofa and 2 big arm chairs. Inside and outside eating and a great big bar. It's all built new because the old lodge burned down 2 winters ago. A young pretty mexican waitress serves overpriced sandwiches that are nothing to write home about.( i spent 12 on a chicken " cutlet" sandwich) But i know im very fussy and overcritical when it comes to eating out. It's not my fault that my Mom and my Babci and Nana and Papa and Dad and Daughters ( including Nicole) are all great cooks and im measuring all food against what im used to. LOL. it was a pleasant diversion though. And the scenery is magnificent.
You can get lost gazing over into the peaks and canyons of the sierras. The Pacific Crest trail crosses that road. The canyons are deep as are the forests and you just wonder about the wildlife that must inhabit them. It looks endless from that vantage point on top of the road.
We were gone for a good 5 hours. It was pleasant enough, there is a comfortable aquaintence -ship between Larry and myself. He likes to talk. And i am a listener . He's a very mild and polite mid-westerner who was transplanted to California when he was 15. A good friend to Mary and Al and my friends in Sonora and is waiting for Fran to come up so we can all do it together next time and hit the farmer's market while we are there.
Kim and Linda ( aka Ailyn) may be dropping by today for some lettuce. there is an over abundance of it, fluffy and ruffly spring green and overgrown spilling out of the raised bed. Much too much for one person and tender and perfect for picking. And today i'll be plucking the first red tomato.
Im still waiting for string beans. I've yet to see many blossoms on them. But there is a gorgeous purple eggplant blooming. Tiny pepper flowers are exposing tiny little nubs of green peppers now too.
I checked the orchard last evening. I see quite a few little pears but very few figs. The big apples , still green and wounded by birds and bruised by their fall from the tall branches and deliciously fragrant lie scattered on the ground around the garden. Not yet ripe, though the fruit they left behind on the upper branches are beginning to blush.
i did put them into the compost bin......not to be wasted rotting on the ground.
Ill plug in the electric fence today since the only thing flying out of the flycatchers nest are flies.
It's 8am now. And that is my self imposed limit on the computer in the morning. Of course ill be checking in on everyone later in the day .
